Principled Ignoring
If you are Pro Equality then Principled Ignoring is good for your mental health.
Almost everything I write about is about Power and Control over others. Equality is the goal. But if you allow the anti-Equality crowd to get at you, then you will suffer. This is because we do not live in, and never will live in, a perfect egalitarian Utopia. None of us are perfect. However, there are some people (and groups) who will do nothing to overcome their own flaws… much incidentally to their own detriment.
So in the past right wing Tory dogma and right wing national print press are classic examples of things that have miffed me off. I now do better in terms of not letting them get to me due to ignoring them. Besides they are not here for us.
I distinguish between Principled Ignoring and Fake Ignoring. I have carried out Fake Ignoring in the past. Its when you half want to ignore but cannot resist reacting. You feel compelled as if hypnotised. But you can snap out of it. Because I have evolved to Principled Ignoring even though I felt like I had no choice but to react in the past. The key to go beyond Fake Ignoring is to confess to yourself that you half want to react. And then work on that reactionary side of yourself as opposed to just pretending to yourself that no part of your mind wants to react. This will be easier to do if you give the thing you dislike a place at the table. In other words the Fake Ignoring occurs because you want them to not exist. But you must accept their existence because they do exist. Once you accept their existence you can ignore them on principle. Because their voice will not send you into psychological repression and denial. Firstly, have a perspective on them that accepts their existence but that justifies your Principled Ignoring of them. If when you think of X all that comes to mind is a feeling of dislike and desire to repress then its nothing but a prejudice. You must develop a perspective so as to justify it. Then given that your perspective does not change the fact that X continues to exist, you now can apply Principled Ignoring to X. The alternative is repetitive dissociation… more commonly referred to these days as being repeatedly triggered. It does not have to be like that. Evolve from Fake Ignoring to Principled Ignoring and then you will experience more relief/better mental health.
